What are the Advantages of Saline Implants?

As the Madison-area’s premier body recontouring surgeon, Dr. Thomas Bartell has earned a reputation for being a true expert in scarless breast augmentation, also known as transaxillary breast augmentation. Dr. Bartell has spent decades perfecting this procedure that results in a natural, beautiful look with no scars left on the chest wall. If you’re considering a breast augmentation, you might be weighing the pros and cons of silicone versus saline implants. However, it’s important to know that Dr. Bartell uses saline implants exclusively for some very important reasons. So, what are the advantages of saline implants? Here are the top two reasons Dr. Bartell feels that they are the best choice for his patients.

  • Saline Implants are Safer than Silicone Implants
  • Saline Implants are Adjustable

Advantage #1: Saline implants are safer than silicone implants.

The most important reason why Dr. Bartell prefers saline implants over silicone is that they are safer for the patient. If a saline implant were to rupture and leak, it would release the saline solution inside the implant. Saline, which is also used in IV’s, is safely absorbed by the body.

Silicone, on the other hand, can cause issues if leaked into the body. Women who have had silicone implant ruptures have sometimes experienced hard or painful lumps, swelling, burning, tingling, or capsular contracture at the site of the leak.

However, leaking silicone implants are not easy to detect and often don’t cause symptoms for quite some time. Unlike saline leaks that result in complete deflation within a day, silicone leaks can’t be seen from the outside and can go undetected for years. For this reason, the FDA recommends having an MRI at 5-6 years after the initial surgery, and then every 2-3 years afterward for women who have silicone implants to ensure that they’re not experiencing a silent rupture.

Advantage #2: Unlike silicone implants, saline breast implants are adjustable.

Another important advantage of saline breast implants is that they’re adjustable. After Dr. Bartell has placed the implant under the chest wall, he can adjust the fill in the implant to achieve just the right size. This means that Dr. Bartell can correct any issues with asymmetry that a patient may be experiencing. Many women naturally have one breast that’s larger than the other.

With silicone implants, however, they simply arrive from the factory and are put in the patient. The doctor is unable to make any adjustment to the implant size on the day of surgery.

The adjustability of saline implants ensures that each patient can get just the right look and size that fits her body best. There’s no one-size-fits-all with saline!

Transaxillary Breast Augmentation in Madison, Wisconsin

During the scarless breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Bartell inserts the implant through a small incision in the armpit. This technique eliminates the need for making incisions on the chest wall. The only scar left after the operation is a small one in the crease of the armpit, which virtually vanishes after six months. In fact, Dr. Bartell himself often can’t find it afterward!
