Why You Should Get Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery might be something you’ve just started thinking about. Maybe you’ve gotten a little older or aren’t quite happy with how you look after you’ve had your children. Or cosmetic surgery might have been on your mind for years. No matter when you first considered it, there are many facets of the process you’ll need to contemplate. But the very first step in the process is the most important to consider: you must first decide who you are doing this for.

The only person you should undergo cosmetic surgery for is YOU. You shouldn’t get cosmetic surgery for anyone else. The only reason you should get cosmetic surgery is to make you feel better about yourself.

Why You Definitely Should NOT Get Cosmetic Surgery

Just like there is only one person you should undergo surgery for, there are plenty of others whom you should NOT have surgery for. You shouldn’t have surgery for a spouse, boyfriend, or anyone who says they love you but wished you looked different.

You also shouldn’t undergo cosmetic surgery for any type of secondary gain, like advancement in employment or to attract the attention of a potential suitor. Any reason to get surgery outside of what’s in you is not a good reason to have it. Only if something about your body is bothering you–and you alone–you change it.

How to Choose the Right Plastic Surgeon for You

Choosing the right cosmetic surgeon is just as important as choosing the right procedure. When choosing a surgeon, it’s essential that you see a doctor who has the right kind and amount of experience performing the kind of procedure you want. When it comes to surgery, it’s important to see an expert.

In addition to experience, you’ll also want to choose a doctor who understands what you want to change about yourself and is on the same wavelength as you. This can only be achieved by a doctor who is a good listener. Even if your doctor is a technical expert in the procedure, if he or she isn’t taking the time to listen to what you want to change and can communicate if he or she can achieve that change for you, odds are you aren’t going to be satisfied with your outcome.

If your initial consult with your plastic surgeon seemed like a one-way street where the doctor did all the talking and none of the listening, you might consider getting a second opinion. Feeling comfortable with the surgeon who is going to be operating on you is vitally important.

Plastic Surgeon Red Flags

Something to look out for when interviewing doctors is a scarcity of proof about his or her skills with a particular procedure. Your doctor should have plenty of before-and-after photos to show you. You should be able to see the real results that that doctor achieved in patients. If your doctor isn’t willing to show you many, this could be a red flag.

Another plastic surgeon red flag is if your doctor can’t tell you how many procedures he or she has performed over the past five years. When it comes to surgery, you want to ensure that you’re in the hands of a true expert, not simply a jack of all trades.

You’ll also want to ask your doctor who will be performing the surgery? Will it be that doctor? Or an assistant? Or a learning student? Also, you’ll want to ask who will be on call after the surgery in case you need assistance. Will it be another doctor you haven’t met before?

Before you undergo any procedure, you’ll want to get the answer to these questions and any more you might have.
