A full-time body re-contouring surgeon
“By coming to our practice, patients have the advantage of seeing a surgeon who specializes in the procedures they’re interested in,” Dr. Bartell said. “I’m not a part-time body re-contouring surgeon. I’m a full-time body re-contouring surgeon. I have successfully performed hundreds and hundreds of procedures over a long time.”
Eschewing the typical large, multi-specialty clinic setting, Dr. Bartell has been in solo practice for more than 20 years. He prides himself on providing the highest quality of personalized care – safely, privately and comfortably.
“I chose to go into solo practice because it allows me to give my patients a level of care that isn’t really possible at a big clinic,” Dr. Bartell said. “I’m personally involved in my patients’ care from the moment they walk in the office through the surgical procedure and postoperative care. And I pride myself on being available to my patients at any time.”
Dr. Bartell’s Education
Dr. Bartell grew up in Madison. He graduated from Yale University’s nationally recognized pre-medicine program. He was a member of the famed Yale Wiffenpoofs, a famous a cappella singing group with a long tradition of performing excellence.
He returned home to the University of Wisconsin Medical School, taking classes at the same hospital where he was born. He spent the next seven years in St. Louis for postgraduate study at Barnes Hospital, associated with Washington University’s top-ranked surgery programs and St. Louis University’s plastic surgery program. This training included a wide variety of general surgical procedures as well as concentration on the specialized areas of plastic and reconstructive surgery. During his training at Barnes, Dr. Bartell authored or co-authored more than a dozen scientific articles. To further refine his surgical skills and knowledge, he completed a prized surgical fellowship with a renowned plastic surgery hand specialist practicing in Tucson, Arizona.
In the years that followed, Dr. Bartell worked in a large plastic surgery practice in the Chicago suburbs. This experience gave him the opportunity to focus extensively on cosmetic procedures and acquire the medical business acumen to start his own practice.
A board-certified plastic surgeon and a dad
Dr. Bartell is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a medical board accredited by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the Wisconsin Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin Medical School.
Dr. Bartell and his wife, Dr. Nina Petrovich Bartell, have three children. Dr. Nina Bartell is a clinical psychologist specializing in forensics involving children and families. She heads up her own Madison-based practice, Advanced Psychological Innovations.
Note: Should you ever need ear, nose or throat care in the Phoenix area, Dr. Bartell highly recommends a talented local surgeon and otolaryngologist – his identical twin, Dr. Thad Bartell.
Katie, our Office Manager, Shares Her Background
With a background of some college courses in human services and customer service skills training, Katie started her medical management career by working with insurance. Processing claims, checking on outstanding claims and creating appeals for patients, Katie enjoys working at Dr. Bartell’s office. She has excellent people skills, and truly loves helping our patients understand the insurance and financial aspect of our practice.
“I started my career in cosmetics/aesthetics with Dr. Bartell. I immediately loved working with his wonderful patients, and know this is a great career choice in medicine for me. I feel that I had found my calling! Listening to patients and really making people confident about themselves brings me a lot of joy.”
Katie enjoys traveling via motorcycle, and is an avid reader. She says, “I am very much a mom, and I spend a lot of my free time with my children. I have one son, and 3 step children. I spend a fair amount of time during the school year working with my son who has some special needs with his academics.

What Katie Loves Most About Working With Dr. Bartell
“This is very difficult to put into words,” Katie explains, “as I have been working with Dr. Bartell for 19 1/2 years. For me it’s his character – who he is, how he presents himself, and his kind and gentle demeanor towards his staff and his patients really shows not only what a wonderful type of person he is, but it also reflects in his surgical abilities. Dr. Bartell loves performing surgery and it shows. He does this for the love that he has for surgery. Dr. Bartell is a man of honor, and is unique in his skills and positive treatment of all people he encounters. This isn’t something you find every day in many people.”
As you can see, Katie really loves working with Dr. Bartell, and she also loves his patients as well. She explains that they choose to come here, and are beautiful people on the inside, but just do not feel beautiful on the outside. To watch both the internal and external transformation from a single surgical procedure is extremely gratifying.
“Being able to help in the education process and to be a part of the support network for each person is what makes this job so enjoyable and fulfilling. I seem to become friends with most patients that come through this office. It is almost always a very positive and satisfying experience for both myself and the patients. As a patient myself, I can relate to what they are going through as I have had several procedures from Dr. Bartell. I am happy to be able to understand their surgical and healing process, as I have walked in their shoes. It makes the patients relax just knowing that I not only work for Dr. Bartell, but also completely believe in his work, having had him performed surgery on myself.”
Katie likes to continually remind patients of the positive results or the end goal, which seems to really help decrease their nerves. She is always available to talk to about any of the procedures in person or over the phone. She is always encouraging and extremely knowledgeable. She is confident that her knowledge about the procedures aid in calming the patients and truly help them relax while at Dr. Bartell’s office.
