Why Have a Labiaplasty?

Women decide to undergo vaginal rejuvenation, or labiaplasty, for two reasons. The first is for symptom relief. Labiaplasty reduces the size of the labia minora, the triangular inner flaps that hang inside the labia majora.

Labia minora can become elongated due to genetics, childbirth, or age. When the labia minora are elongated, they can become pinched when sitting down, wearing tight clothing, or riding a bicycle. Women might feel pain, itchiness, or discomfort during sex.

Another reason why women request labiaplasties is to improve their appearance in tight clothing, swimwear, or when nude. Elongated labia minora can sometimes be seen in leggings or yoga pants or can hang below a swimsuit. Having visible genitals can cause women to feel shame and embarrassment.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you might be a good candidate for labiaplasty surgery.

What to Expect from Surgery

One great benefit of labiaplasty surgery is that it delivers big benefits through a simple operation. In a one-hour procedure, Dr. Bartell takes a wedge of tissue out of the labia minora and reapproximates the edges. This method results in a better color and texture match with the surrounding tissue. After the procedure, the labia minora are smaller and tucked in beneath the labia majora. Dr. Bartell performs the labiaplasty under general anaesthesia.

After the procedure, patients spend about half an hour in the recovery room before being sent home. Aftercare is much like after having a baby: there are no physical restrictions, but patients might feel a little uncomfortable for a day or two. Dr. Bartell will give you pain medication for any discomfort. Five days later, patients come back to see Dr. Bartell and are usually back to their normal activities by then.
