Preparing for Your Body Recontouring Surgery

Congratulations on choosing Dr. Thomas Bartell, body recontouring specialist, for your body recontouring procedure! Whether you’ve opted to have breast augmentation, a tummy tuck, liposuction, or another procedure, you can feel confident that you’ve chosen a skilled, competent surgeon for the job. Dr. Bartell is a premier plastic surgeon with decades of below-the-neck body recontouring experience.

Now that you know the date of your procedure, you can begin the necessary preparations to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible. Here’s a quick checklist to review as you are preparing for your body recontouring surgery:

  • Request time off after surgery
  • Choose a support person
  • Arrange affairs ahead of time
  • Check medications
  • Eat healthfully
  • Line up help
  • Have the right expectations
  • Call our office with questions

Request Time Off After Surgery

Body recontouring is a major surgery, so you’ll need to plan to take some days off of work after the procedure to allow your body to heal. A labiaplasty requires three-to-five days off. Breast augmentations necessitate four-to-five recovery days before returning to deskwork. Arm lift and liposuction recovery time is five-to-seven days, and a tummy tuck requires seven-to-ten days off. Planning those days off of work ahead of time will help you focus on resting during your recovery period.

Choose a Support Person

Before your body recontouring procedure, you’ll also need to choose a support person who will drive you to and home from the clinic on the day of surgery. He or she will also need to be reachable by staff during the actual surgery but not required to stay in the clinic. Additionally, you’ll need either the same person or someone else to stay with you for the next twenty-four hours. Choose a responsible adult who loves and cares about you!

Arrange Affairs Ahead of Time

Your recovery period is no time to be worrying about paying bills, getting groceries, or figuring out your child’s extracurricular carpool. Make sure to take care of these things before your surgery so that you can simply relax after your procedure.

Eat Healthfully

In the weeks leading up to your procedure and afterward, you’ll want to make a conscious effort to eat healthfully. A diet full of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains will help your body recover more quickly after surgery.

As you prepare healthy meals before your procedure, make a double batch and freeze the extra for use during your recovery period. Having a freezer full of nutritious meals will help alleviate stress and worry after your surgery.

Check Medications

You should have received guidelines about the types of medicine you can and cannot use before and after surgery. Common medicines and supplements that ought to be avoided prior to and after surgery include: vitamin E, ibuprofen, and medicine containing aspirin. It’s essential to follow these guidelines for your health and safety. If you have questions about current medications or supplements you are using, please call our office today.

Line Up Help

As you are preparing for your body recontouring surgery, remember to line up help for after your surgery. In the days immediately after your procedure, you will have limited mobility and possible lifting restrictions depending on the type of surgery you have. Don’t be shy in asking friends and family for assistance with childcare, driving, housekeeping, or just to sit with you.

Have the Right Expectations

Dr. Bartell is known for achieving beautiful, natural-looking results in his patients. However, final results might not be apparent for several weeks or months after your surgery. Prepare to be patient with your body as it heals into its new shape. Dr. Bartell’s aim is to improve your body, not perfect it, as perfection isn’t a realistic goal. If both you and Dr. Bartell are satisfied with the results, then the body recontouring surgery will have been a success.
