Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to work with a surgeon for your cosmetic procedure! Which one, though, is right for you?
Now that you’re ready to move forward with your surgery, how do you select the surgeon that best fits your needs? Nowadays there are so many choices to pick from, and it can be difficult to determine from the multitude of web sites alone what would work best for you as you are bombarded with options, all of which are exclaiming that you should pick them over everyone else.
First off, the surgeon you choose should always be Board Certified, and certified by an accredited board such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This will ensure that the surgeon has the proper training to perform your procedure.
Also, the procedures should be performed in an accredited facility. Ask to be shown around the clinic you are interested in to make sure everything is being properly sterilized and that the correct steps are being taken to ensure patient safety.
Ideally, the surgeon should specialize in the type of procedure which you are interested in. All too often, surgeons who are trained in a wide variety of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures try to be a “jack of all trades, master of none.” On the other hand, someone who specializes in one aspect of plastic surgery often tends to do a better job as they have much more experience doing that particular procedure.
It’s important that you find a surgeon who you not only feel comfortable with, but one who also listens to you and your concerns. A surgeon who spends only a few minutes with you, informing you of what he would recommend without listening to your concerns is not a good fit.
Also make sure you select a surgeon who will be available to you after the surgery. Complications are unusual, but if one occurs you will want to be communicating with your surgeon, not your surgeon’s partner or nurse.
Additionally, how easy will it be to get an appointment on short notice to address a concern. Anything more than one or two days is unacceptable.
Cosmetic surgery is an intensely personal choice. It’s always important that you make the right choice, no matter how long it takes. Ask as many questions as you can and demand answers before you commit to any type procedure, no matter how small. By doing so your chances for a successful outcome will be improved significantly, and you will find yourself happier with your decisions in the long run.
